Summary

  • Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh, the three other dragons in Tears of the Kingdom, may have also swallowed Secret Stones to become immortal dragons.
  • These dragons have minimal impact in-game, but Breath of the Wild and TOTK hint at their potential significance, and suggest they could be more than just representations of the goddesses.
  • Though it is not confirmed, it is likely that the other dragons underwent the same transformation as the Light Dragon, becoming immortal and losing their sense of self by swallowing a Secret Stone.

Though the Light Dragon is a primary focus in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there are three other familiar dragons featured in the game as well – Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh. They can all be seen flying among the Sky Islands, and occasionally through the Depths as well. With the revelation around Secret Stones and how they created the Light Dragon by being swallowed, many are now wondering what this means for the other beloved dragons.

Though Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh are also seen in Breath of the Wild, they have very minimal impact on anything, being primarily sources of materials, much as they are in Tears of the Kingdom, though Naydra does have a special sequence in BOTW where the dragon is possessed by Calamity Ganon's Malice. In BOTW, they were believed to be nothing more than representations of the goddesses, Din, Nayru, and Farore. However, now it is possible they could be something more. When Mineru reveals that swallowing a Secret Stone creates an immortal dragon out of the , it stands to reason that this could explain the existence of Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh.

How Tears Of The Kingdom's Immortal Dragons Are Created

TOTK's Dragon Tears are memories specifically linked to the Light Dragon, and left behind for Link to collect, something that is also revealed through a memory. As players begin to unravel the past through these memories, they will learn the key occurrences in Princess Zelda's storyline, revealing that she was forced to swallow her Secret Stone, which, according to the Sage of Spirit, Mineru, turned her into an immortal dragon. Players are able to witness this process through the memories which then further confirm that the Light Dragon is carrying the Master Sword for Link, allowing Zelda to fulfill her sacrificial purpose.

When this process is being explained, Mineru describes it as saying that to swallow a Secret Stone is to become an immortal dragon, and that, while blessed with eternal life, the will lose all sense of themselves. This is a steep price to pay, so it makes sense that Zelda, and anyone else for that matter, would only use it if she believed it to be necessary. This then begs the question that if the other three dragons, Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh, are also beings who swallowed Secret Stones, then what reason could they possibly have had to make such a dramatic choice.

Swallowing The Secret Stone Has Been Done Before

When it is introduced that by swallowing a Secret Stone, one becomes an immortal dragon, it is presented so matter of fact, which suggests it has been done before at some point in the past. As it is being explained by the Zonai Sage of Spirit, Mineru, she makes it sound as if it has happened before as she describes the process and how the person swallowing the Stone will lose all sense of their self and undergo a dramatic transformation. Something that it seems unlikely anyone could know unless they had witnessed it firsthand.

As Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh are the only other dragons present in the game, this leads to speculation that they are beings who also swallowed Secret Stones as well. While it may be said in other games and Zelda lore that the dragons are based on the three goddesses, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has also shown that it does not necessarily follow the traditional Zelda timeline, and thus this means that these three dragons may actually have been Zonai figures of the past who underwent this traumatic transformation for some reason of great significance, similar to Zelda. However, at this time it is neither confirm nor denied whether this is the case.

Who Are Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh?

As it is explained at points in Zelda lore, the goddesses Farore, Din, and Nayru were the ones to create the world and the Triforce, and then entrusted Hylia, another goddess, to protect it. Zelda is said to be a personification of Hylia, which means that one of these goddesses is technically a confirmed immortal dragon in Tears of the Kingdom. So it is not that far-fetched to believe that the others could’ve simply encountered the same fate.

It's possible that this was simply a way of including the goddesses and making them more present throughout the game. However, as the Zonai are described as the founders of Hyrule, it is also possible that in the version of Hyrule TOTK depicts, the goddesses or some incarnation of them were Zonai who were prevalent in the past and swallowed their Secret Stones to become immortal dragons. There are also depiction’s throughout Zelda history that represent the same beings not as goddesses, but simply as average beings with special abilities, including Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, which could appear to fall more in line with the idea of them being Zonai.

Regardless of whether this is the case, it is clear that it has been done before, and since the result of swallowing the Stone is a form of immortality, this means they have to still exist somewhere. Therefore, in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, it stands to reason that Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh must be the ones who originally swallowed their Stones, and have now been roaming for eons, and will continue to do so, much like the Light Dragon in Zelda: TOTK.

Regardless of whatever theories players decide to come up with, there is nothing currently confirmed to explain the relationship between these three dragons in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – to the goddesses or any other beings. Additionally, while it is assumed that the Secret Stone process has been done before because there is knowledge of it, it is also possible that this is just well-known and described in history somewhere and perhaps not something that the Sage of Spirit has witnessed herself. Without any confirmation, there is no way to know whether there is anything of significance relating to the other three dragons, but one thing is for sure, the Light Dragon is the result of this process and the only one that has confirmed relation to the Secret Stones.
