Robert De Niro has been a staple of the big screen for decades, rising to fame due to his collaborations with filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Movies like Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) helped to put De Niro on the map as an actor. Other notable roles from this era include The Deer Hunter (1978), The King of Comedy (1982), Once Upon a Time In America (1984), The Untouchables (1987), and, of course, Goodfellas (1990). The '90s also saw other notable titles like Casino (1995) and Heat (1995).

De Niro's career has evolved over the past few decades, and the types of roles he's taken on have changed as he's gotten older. One thing that has remained fairly constant, however, is that the roles he takes on are in movies. De Niro recently reunited with Scorsese, for example, for The Irishman in 2019 and Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023. Now, though, De Niro has made the jump to streaming television for his next major project, a limited series that released straight to Netflix.

With reviews coming in, Zero Day's critics score is now taking shape on Rotten Tomatoes. As of writing, the De Niro series sits as a lackluster 46% from 13 reviews. Though this score is certain to fluctuate as more reviews are added, it has earned the series a "rotten" designation. There aren't enough audience ratings yet for a Popcornmeter score to appear, but one should show up over the next day or two as more people get a chance to watch.

De Niro recently had a ing role in Nada, a limited series. This show scored 83% on Rotten Tomatoes from 6 reviews.

What Zero Day's Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Show

The Netflix Show's Low Score Explained

The reviews that have been released for Zero Day thus far vary in their criticisms of the show. One common complaint is that the show fails to take any risks, playing it too safe with its story and politics, draining context from events in order to separate the show from the real world. Other reviews take issue with the lack of a compelling mystery in this mystery show. In his review for ScreenRant, Grant Hermanns criticizes Zero Day for failing to focus on the conspiracy at the center of the story:

Despite the interesting setup, the creative trio shifts from the mystery that served as the story's catalyst to focus on the ensemble cast of characters, which proves to be the show's biggest downfall. If Zero Day had double digits' worth of episodes, this approach would have been welcome, as every story should take the time to flesh out its characters alongside the larger plot. But, with only six episodes, a terrible imbalance comes to the surface as the mystery is rushed to its ending.

With even the impressive Zero Day cast not endearing the show to critics, it will now be up to audiences to decide whether it's a hit or not. It's not unusual for audiences to diverge significantly from critics on movies and TV on Rotten Tomatoes, and that could certainly be the case here. Some of Netflix's biggest viewership hits, after all, aren't critically acclaimed. It will be a few days before a more full picture emerges regarding Zero Day's reception, but it evidently hasn't gotten off to a promising start.
