The cast of finally moving forward on the long-awaited sequel to their zombie-apocalypse cult hit. Almost everyone involved with the first Zombieland is returning, but the sequel will also introduce some new faces.
2009's Zombieland starred Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin. The story written - by Deadpool's Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese - follows an unlikely group that's formed amidst the apocalypse and a need to survive. Ruben Flesicher directed the energetic film that was long viewed as a single, standalone story. After years of working on the script though, Sony now has put Zombieland 2 on the front burner. Production is set to begin early next year, so that it can hit theaters before the end of 2019, right around the tenth anniversary of the original. This will make everything about the sequel quite familiar, but a new element has finally been added.

Variety reports Zoey Deutch has ed the cast of Zombieland 2. Details on her character have not been revealed. Deutch recently starred in Netflix's rom-com Set It Up that critics and audiences adored. She'ss also been seen in Everybody Wants Some!!, Why Him?, and Before I Fall. The addition of Deutch marks the first new cast member for the sequel.
Since there are no character details on Deutch's role, it's a bit difficult to gain an understanding of how she'll factor in. She's shown she can just about do it all, so there's no reason to believe Deutch won't deliver on her role regardless of what it is or how large it may be. Previous supposedly leaked plot and character details for Zombieland 2 teased the addition of a few new characters. Of that group, only the "ditzy blonde" Madison who is a new romantic interest for Eisenberg's Columbus seems to be a fit for Deutch. This could make sense given her success as a romantic interest, but hopefully she can be a bit more capable on her own if someone of Deutch's talent is taking the role.
Deutch's casting signals that Sony is now firmly in the casting phase of pre-production when it comes to Zombieland 2. With the sequel retaining the original four stars, there may not be that many new roles that are of any significance to the story. Still, it should be expected that the franchise lands a few other new faces. With the January start to filming, it shouldn't be too long before the cast is completely assembled and more details on Zombieland 2 surface.
