See All10 Harsh Realities HBO's Harry Potter Remake Can't Avoid
People need to stop thinking they somehow know "better" than the audiences or the author.
STICK TO THE SOURCE. It's not complicated. There's a reason the books & films were popular, and it's not because audiences wanted them altered.
Want to tell a "diverse" or "modern audience" story? Write you own. Stop pissing on beloved franchises.
After Jenna Ortega's Recent Marvel Comments, I'm Convinced Her 1 MCU Appearance Is Even More Of A Wasted Opportunity
Sorry, but its not like they removed a dramatic Oscar winning performance from the film. She was child actress, whose main role was as a magaffin to explain why the vice president sold out to the Mandarin, at a glace, without a ton of useless exposition. Which worked just fine in the film. She didn't need to speak.
We're only even talking about this because Jenna went on to have a career.
Terminator 7's Perfect Arnold Schwarzenegger Replacement Is Appearing In A Movie With Him This Year
We had Terminator 1, 2 then three Terminator 3 attempts, all poor. with an actual sequel (Salvation) in the mix, ed more for Christian Bale's on-set tantrum than the film itself.
Exhausted franchise? No. Just lacking a sequel of note, well written by someone who'd watched and/or cared about 1 & 2.
12 Years After Disney Bought Lucasfilm, Star Wars' New TV Show Finally Shows What It Really Means To Be A Jedi
The pacing of the first episode was poor. Too slow and boring for children, but too childish for most adults to enjoy.
But I persevered, giving it the benefit of the "four episode" test and it picked up by the second episode, with more action, more character & world-building. I'm glad I gave it a chance.
What are the best vampire movies ever?
Francis Ford Coppola's (not Bram Stoker's) Dracula was an okay film raised up by Gary Oldman's performance, but the jarring miscasting of Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves just broke the film - their accents were the stuff of The Simpsons. The effects were amazing, but the plot wildly deviated from the story of Dracula, trying to make a love story where none existed (Hobbit anyone?).
Good adaptations and good Vampire films would be 1979's Salem's Lot, or 2007's 30 Days of Night.
Blade (which arguably started the Marvel Movie era) 1998 is excellent for its performances, soundtrack and cinematography.
For laughs there's 1987's The Lost Boys or 1985's Fright Night, an excellent vampire comedy and tribute the horror genre, Peter Vincent being an amalgam of Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Skip the horrible 2014 remake.
1994's Interview with a Vampire is good, but again, suffers from some terrible miscasting. Lestat is a 20 year old 6ft tall blonde Frenchman, not what comes to mind when you think of Tom Cruise and Armand was a 17 year old red-headed boy, the irony being he was the OLDEST vampire known to be alive, utterly wasted by casting Antonio Banderas.
In anime, there are the two Vampire Hunter: D films from 1985 & 2000, as well as 2000's Blood: The last Vampire.
The original 2008 Let The Right One In (and the short lived 2022 TV series it inspired) are good, the US remake of the film, less so. The recent 2023 Last Voyage of the Demeter was good, but due to rights issues never made it into cinemas in most countries, I don't even know if it's on streaming - I had to wait for the Bluray.
If more character driven vampires are your thing, then 2013's Only Lovers Left Alive or 1983's The Hunger (Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie & Susan Sarandon) directed by Tony Scott - assuming you can find it.
Then we're down to vampire films that are not as good as Coppola's film, such as the schlocky but entertaining vampire / werewolf action series of Underworld films.
Enjoy!
