This is probably the most misunderstood movie ever, and one of the saddest once you understand it. The kid is not a computer genius. There is no video game created by the kid. The video game is Sega Bass Fishing, you literally see it on his monitor. All of the "video game" sequences take place in the kid's head. He doesn't get released to his mum's recognisance at the end. He's clearly still in jail. There's literally a shot of him still sitting in jail. It's a tragic story about a kid who, through imagining his dead dad as a character in a video game, finally finds the courage to murder his abusive stepfather, and goes to jail. That's it.

My brother is a massive D&D nerd and he absolutely loved the movie. I have no interest in D&D, and didn't watch it. It was made for the fans – there obviously just aren't enough of them.
