It seems your veiw of the shortcomings of the story is really about perspective. Peter, in the story, is not as strong, fast, or even as intelligent as the antagonist. Additionally, he is governed by the 'responsibility' that comes with his great power. AND, he views Otto as a FRIEND, (a dynamic shared by Norman and Harry Osborn.)

The question to ask is WHY is RDJ playing a villain that is 99% masked. LOOK at the tools marvel has in place. RDJ does not love iron man......he loves TONY STARK, who really exhibits his own persona.

So, RDJ ISN'T playing Victor Von Doom......He's playing TONY STARK. A tragic, flawed, FAILED Tony Stark.

So.....WHAT Canon events that ALL MCU Fandom are ALREADY aware of that could be twisted in a "WHAT IF... ." scenario that would give buy in, heart, and a WTF response from the audience?

Stark dodged a bullet with Ultron. Sokovia accords aside, he personally escaped with minimal repercussions, Civil War aside. WHAT IF.......? ultron won? At least partially? That, in the crucial final battle, the avengers didn't side with Stark. What if Tony faced Ultron alone, and suffered disfigurement? AND lost his Universe's earth? Or, in that reality's Civil War, he had to destroy the Avengers? OR, in their Endgame, he defeated Thanos, BUT lost Pepper and his daughter? Who would he blame? Steve......AND the Avengers, AND the world governments if he felt betrayed.

in these scenarios, it would also explain why Stark would get the moniker "Dr. DOOM". HIS actions, although perhaps unintentional, RESULT in CATASTROPHIC consequences, making him an enemy of humanity.

ALL COULD BE COMPELLING scenarios that would REQUIRE RDJ, AND have the emotional stakes needed for the audience.

ACTUALLY, Batman has outsold, out published, outboxofficed, and out TOYED (HELLO, McFarlane Toys) Superman for DECADES.....AT LEAST since "Batman, year one."
