While they may be supernatural creatures, the characters in The Vampire Diaries still have qualities that make them human. As said in the show many times, humanity is a vampire's greatest weakness, and no matter how much they try to fight it, it always finds its way back in.
Similar to sitcom characters, there's more to them than meets the eye. Whether they are seen as a villain or comedic relief, the best-written characters have multiple layers to unravel. Although it's classified as a supernatural drama, every character in The Vampire Diaries has a sitcom counterpart that can be determined by their personality and lifestyle.
Rebekah Mikaelson - Dee Reynolds (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia)
Rebekah Mikealson and Dee from Dee is the punching bag of the It's Always Sunny gang.
They both have their faults, and Dee is inherently more cynical than Rebekah, but they're smarter than the people who make fun of them. Rebekah and Dee want to be taken seriously, despite being constantly knocked down by life.
Katherine Pierce - Gina Linetti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
Like Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Katherine Pierce is the most diabolical character in her show. She's always one step ahead of everyone else, and she's able to accomplish difficult tasks with little to no effort. Anytime her co-workers need help, they always turn to Gina because of the master plans she's able to pull off.
Katherine is definitely a more evil version of Gina, but if Gina was a vampire, that probably wouldn't hold up. Katherine and Gina were also fan-favorite characters who left their series too early.
Kai Parker - Dan Egan (Veep)
Kai Parker doesn't care about the people he hurts and actually finds their pain amusing. Dan from the most powerful villains in The Vampire Diaries, and Dan is often the brains of the operation.
However, they can never be trusted because they're naturally cynical and only out for themselves. They have a mean sense of humor, which is funny in the world of fiction, but not so funny in real life.
Bonnie Bennett - Amy Sosa (Superstore)
Bonnie Bennett and Amy from Superstore are both powerful women who deserve better than the hand they were dealt. They're used to being walked all over by the people around them because they're often the only two characters who can get things done.
Bonnie and Amy both reach a point where they stop letting their friends push them around and stand up for themselves. Bonnie refuses to let vampires keep taking advantage of her for her magic, and Amy finally starts putting herself first.
Caroline Forbes - Leslie Knope (Parks And Recreation)
Caroline Forbes and Leslie from Parks and Recreation are the optimists of their groups. They're always prepared, love to host celebrations, and go out of their way to help their friends.
Caroline and Leslie's most distinguishable characteristic is that they refuse to let anyone tell them they can't do something. Even when the odds are stacked against them, they don't give up. Because of her outgoing personality, some viewers even argue that Caroline should have been the lead character of The Vampire Diaries.
Klaus Mikaelson - Michael (The Good Place)
Every show has a big bad, and Klaus Mikaelson and Michael from The Good Place fit the roles well. They were entertaining, funny, but most of all, they were evil. Klaus and Michael took pride in being bad people and didn't let simple human feelings get in their way.
The characters underwent massive development, and it was their love for their families that made them someone who was worthy of redemption. In a way, they both got satisfying endings, as Michael became a human, and Klaus gave up his immortal life for his daughter.
Matt Donovan - Ross Geller (Friends)
It's no secret that Friends is also a character that can't always be counted on, as he has a tendency to put his pride before everything else.
Ross and Matt gave off a "nice guy" vibe during the first few seasons, but went downhill quickly. The biggest difference between them is that Ross is funny, and Matt is just bland.
Elena Gilbert - D.J. Fuller (Fuller House)
Elena Gilbert is the lead character of The Vampire Diaries, as D.J. is the lead character of the Fuller House. They're both nurturing people who have a tendency to go overboard and mother their friends.
Elena always comes off as a bit more condescending, while D.J. is just portrayed as goofy. Elena was also at the head of a love triangle with Stefan and Damon, and D.J. was torn between her old flame, Steve, and her co-worker, Matt.
Stefan Salvatore - Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld)
Several viewers considered Stefan Salvatore and Jerry from Seinfeld to be the blandest characters in their shows. However, it's what made their dry sense of humor so fun and unexpected. Jerry has a superiority complex, and there are fans who say the same about Stefan.
Stefan is significantly more selfless than Jerry and doesn't share his egocentrism. They have plenty of great moments, but it doesn't change the fact that they both dulled in comparison to the rest of the cast.

Because of their contrasting traits, it makes it difficult for viewers to love them, but even more difficult to hate them. At the end of the day, the majority of fans wanted both Damon and Barney to get happy endings.
