I thought Worf's and Jadzia's wedding was a great addition to DS9. I loved the dynamics and humour like the sometimes bickering between the two old men. LOL. :)
This is my favourite TOS episode. And I always thought Joan Collins was so amazing in it.
I'll watch this episode at least once a year. And I got my kids to watch it too. LOL.
There is an audio book for The City on the Edge of Forever that has a recording of Harlan Ellison talking about some of the things that was in his version versus the version that aired. Hearing him talk about those points I could see how it would go against Gene Roddenberry's vision of Starfleet. Ellison's version would have been more edgy and shockful. But I think the final version is amazing. It fully stretched the souls of the characters to their limits and kept me on the edge of my seat with a powerful and gut wrenching story. I mean, it must have been good, it won a Hugo! :)
I just re-watched this movie last month, and totally enjoyed it.
This was after finishing reading the four books in Star Trek's "The Lost Years" series that covered what the TOS crew was up to between TOS and TMP. As soon as I finished the last book, I was so in the mood to watch TMP again.
I think, if you are into the TOS crew, then this movie does not seem dated at all. Stylewise it perfectly fits between TOS and the rest of the TOS movies. And IMHO it held up really well. I mean . . . as a Star Trek TOS fan, the idea of wondering if this movie was "dated" hadn't even crossed my mind.
And as far as the fly by around the Enterprise, yes, it was long . . . but I enjoyed it. LOL. :)
I've only seen a bit of the season 3 trailer. My initial thought about the retro episode was, "This could be fun."
I was thinking maybe it would be referencing older shows like Tom Corbett Space Cadet. If so, someone would post about the different references, and I'd Google the references and learn more about an old show / story and I'd be pulled down the rabbit hole learning about these old shows. LOL.
My other thought is SNW is an anthology of different writers and stories, like "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame" series of anthology books.
You get treated to different ideas and writing styles.
Of course, there may be an episode here and there that you don't connect with, but IMHO this is a great way to explore Sci-Fi as you never know what's going to happen next. :)
For me, Subspace Rhapsody was one of my favourite episodes.
Of course, I don't necessarily want an opera episode per season, especially if there is only going to be 10 episodes per season.
But, I don't mind, and kinda want at least 1 "out there" episode per season. For season 1 I would consider that episode the "The Elysian Kingdom" episode.
For TNG that might have been something like "The Inner Light".
The Elysian Kingdom, Subspace Rhapsody and The Inner Light are among my favourite episodes.
Maybe this retro episode in season 3 counts as that "out there" episode? LOL. :)
I had this exact conversation with a fellow trekkie when he was saying how he tried to get his girlfriend to watch Discovery.
He said she didn't get into Discovery.
I told him to try Strange New Worlds. It is episodic, so you can watch a single show and be done. You don't necessarily need to commit for the whole season. If you didn't like one episode, then the good thing is the next episode could be something completely different.
It can go from being serious in an episode like Ad Astra per Aspera, or being romantic like Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, to being a comedy like in Charades or being something completely different like in Subspace Rhapsody.
I agree a Wind Waker sequel for the Switch/2 would be great.
But . . . also bring the original to Switch/2 as well.
One of the great things about the Switch IMHO has been that you can play some of the great old games that are now hard to get. So, instead of a great game being trapped on an old console that is hard to get, and trying to get a copy of the game that is so expensive now . . . you can get some of those games on a current platform. It allows new audiences to experience and enjoy some of the classics.
Ok, here's a thought . . . if they bring out a Wind Waker 2 . . . maybe have it so you can choose between art styles. So you can play the game with Wind Waker style artwork, or you can play the game with optional artwork styles like Twilight Princess style, or BotW style artwork.
This option is available for games like R-Type on the Switch. You can choose between old-school pixel artwork or more modern smooth artwork.
The funny thing is, because it was different (ie. Kelvin Timeline, so there are slight differences here and there from the TOS movies) it got me kinda looking out for what was different between it and the TOS movies.
This got me to rewatch all the TOS movies again and reminded me how much I enjoy these movies. It even got me in the mood to read The Lost Years series of books just to fill in the gap between TOS and TMP.
I think J.J. Abrams "reboot" of Star Trek was done really well. Because it is a different timeline, it does not replace the TOS movies. Each is its own thing. And each can be enjoyed by themselves or together. It can even pull in new audiences who then might go back and watch the TOS movies.
As for Kirk's father's death . . . one thought that crosses my mind is sacrifice. In TOS, there is a book "Star Trek Final Frontier - written by Diane Carrey" that follows George Kirk (James Kirk's father) and it shows George is feeling bad about spending so much time away from his boys. So it shows his sacrifice. In J.J. Abrams movie, George Kirk makes the ultimate sacrifice for the Federation, his crew and his wife and son. Two different fates for George Kirk, but both would go on to affect James Kirk in their respective timelines.
Now . . . as for the Enterprise . . . my question is how or who named it the Enterprise in the Kelvin Timeline? I think in the original timeline it can be attributed to either George Kirk or Zefram Cochrane.
It is a great name. And for the past little while I've been interested in finding out more on how it is explained inverse how the Enterprise got its name.
(Spoilers Galore Alert)
In our universe, Roddenberry took the name from the USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier. Star Trek Fans petitioned and got the 1st Space Shuttle named Enterprise. And pictures of both appear in TMP.
Inverse, it was Kirk's father that gives the new Star Ship the name Enterprise in the book Star Trek Final Frontier released in 1988 written by Diane Carey. (Not to be mixed up with the movie "The" Final Frontier.) So that explains the Star Ship. April wanted to call the unnamed Star Ship the Constitution, but Kirk didn't like that idea. Eventually Kirk comes up with the name Enterprise.
But when Star Trek Enterprise released in 2001, and the NX-01 got the name Enterprise, that kinda broke George Kirk coming up with the name Enterprise for the Star Ship because the NX-01 would predate the Star Ship. But this might be explained in the movie Star Trek: First released in 1996 where Cochrane is exposed to the name Enterprise by the TNG crew. LOL. (NOTE: These events may mean that the book Final Frontier is not part of the current timeline?)
And then there is the Kelvin timeline. Kirk's father es away shortly after he is born, so Kirk's father couldn't have come up with the name Enterprise, as in the book Final Frontier. So . . . where does the name Enterprise come from in the Kelvin timeline?
If anyone knows, please post a reply. And also with any other explanation of where the name Enterprise comes from inverse. :)
As for Endgame's blockbuster success . . . I always thought it was because it was the next movie in so many franchises / characters. It had so many audiences that it was geared up for.
Some fans may have watched Thor movies, and others Spider-man. And then there was The Hulk, Dr Strange, Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-man, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther, etc . . .
If you were a fan of any of those characters or franchises, then . . . by the time Endgame rolled around, you were kinda hooked to go watch it. LOL. I was not surprised so many people went to watch it, and probably watch it multiple times. LOL.
I personally thought that that was genius.
And then there were the Avengers movies. They were like the curtain calls at a theatre. Warning everyone and getting everyone ready for the "final curtain call".
For me, I'm totally looking forward to Doomsday. :)
